Marge was my seventh Versatility Dog representing our fourth generation. Marge is the dig that enveloped my heart and truly made me a better person. On the beginning, I always thought that I would be keeping her litter sister. But, there was something about Marge…there was always something about Marge!
Her conformation career was one of extremes. She was either first on the class or last. Her sturdy bone and lower stationed body were more easily rewarded under breeder judges. Our highlight came at the 2001 Spokane Nationals where she was first in the Futurity 6-9 puppy class (Karen Erickson), first in the Sweeps 6-9 puppy class (Margret Baertschi), and third in the regular classes (Mary Alice Eschweiler). What a thrill for us! In 2003 Marge was second in the competitive Bred By Exhibitor class (Sharon Smith).
In January 2005, at the age of four and a half, Marge had surgery for transitional cell carcinoma. Even with clear margins, the vets gave us six months to live. Well, we were not about sit around. We were already working in draft and obedience. She sailed through the Novice Draft test and was quite pleased with herself. She then teamed up with her mum, Brigette, for Novice Brace in September. They were beautiful together. In obedience, she earned two fourth place ribbons and never did a recall without jumping up in my arms on the “finish” ~ not great for points, but I loved it and the crowd loved it! Always creative performances, we have enjoyed each and every day!
My dear Budder Bud earned her three working titles while undergoing chemotherapy. Marge seized each day with a smile and never read the reports about her cancer. She taught me so much about life and grace. Up until the last few weeks, she was happy, pushy and a stubborn wonderful girl. She defied the odds and survived just over a year. Yes, there was always something about Marge. Enjoy life! Oh Bud, how I miss you. God is so lucky to have you to cuddle up with each night. I will see you on the other side.
